We are friendly experts who love what we do.
Our understanding of Visual Stress goes deeper than just as practitioners, we have become experts by experience - our own, as well as those of our patients - from whom we are always learning. We know what it is like to have the difficulties you are experiencing. We also know how transformative precision tinted lenses can be. We have lived experience of neurodivergence which can be helpful for some of our patients to know.
As a family-run and family-orientated business, we value every one of our patients so take the time to give unrushed expert advice to help find the best solution.
Vision Through Colour is all about quality relationships - our patients, our team, our suppliers and the local community.
Listening well places value on people and the mutual relationship of trust. Relief and confidence come when people feel understood; the reassurance of being understood leads to trust and validation.
"Andrew, how did Vision Through Colour come to be?"
It goes without saying that vision and seeing well is dependent on healthy, well-functioning eyes and this is what most of my Optometry course at university concentrated on. I loved it!... it was a real privilege to be able to learn about something so remarkable as vision in such depth and then to be able to go on to help people see better, through preventative as well as corrective approaches to eye care.
We also learned about visual perception – how the brain uses visual information to make sense of the world in order for us to navigate and function within it. I was one of the few in my year interested enough in the area of visual perception to carry out a final year project in this area - my interest and curiosity only continued with the more I knew!
Learning about the complexity of the brain and visual system beyond the eyes themselves held a curiosity and fascination for me and even 30 years later, with the advancement of phenomenal brain imaging that shows us more of how the brain functions, there is still so much we don’t understand.
Of course, 30 years ago we had no idea quite how much more visually demanding the world was going to become and how much more technology was going to dominate our lives. For younger readers, these were the days before smartphones and even Blackberrys! (The 1st iPhone wasn’t launched until over a decade later, in 2007).
We were taught about visual stress at university, and then I had found coloured overlays had helped some patients with visual stress in the first few years of my career. It became personal for me in the mid-00s when our daughter was struggling to read and found a coloured overlay really helpful. I decided to do more intensive training and invest in a colorimeter. My wife, Louise, who was really struggling with migraines, became interested and found precision tinted lenses made a huge difference to her headaches and ability to read.
We had started a community optometry practice in 2002 and so after getting the colorimeter, the visual stress work just built up gradually by recommendation.
With time, as well as those struggling with reading and text, we found an increasing number of neurodivergent individuals with light sensitivity and visual overwhelm were coming to see us and were benefitting from colour. As things got busier in the main practice, we grow to the point that we needed a dedicated space for the visual stress work and moved here, forming Vision Through Colour clinic as a separate site in 2023.
